MANUS - Madurai Nephro-Urology Society was started in the year 1991 by the initiative of Dr.N.Sethuraman (Patron) , Dr. S. Varadarajan (Founder President) ,Dr. N. Vijayasankaran (Founder Secretary ) and with the active involvement of 11 urologists and nephrologists practicing in Madurai at that period of time. This was the result of inspiration derived from Madras Urological Society and Calicut Urology Club. This unique concept of getting urologists and nephrologists together on board was very fruitful particularly for renal transplantation which was at an infant stage then. After overcoming many hurdles successfully, now it is registered as MANUS Trust, thanks to Dr.D.Paul Vincent for his untiring efforts.
The purpose of the society was to have academic interactions among the members regarding nephro- urology problems as there were no other means of sharing our knowledge & experience.
There were initially 11 members - Dr.N.Sethuraman, Dr.S.Varadarajan, late Dr. V. Ravindranath, Dr. K. Jawahar, Dr.V.Ramesh, Dr.N.Vijayasankaran, Dr.A.Mossadeq, late Dr.Arunachalam, Dr.A.Jeyachandran, and nephrologists Dr.P.Soundarapandian and Dr. T.Dhinakaran.
The first meeting was sponsored by Dr.N.Sethuraman and conducted at Pandiyan Hotel Madurai in the year 1991 . Many of the earlier meetings - mostly monthly- were conducted at the roof of the nursing homes to which the members were attached or owning, make shift arrangements in MMHRC (as it was being constructed), JJ Hospital, Dr.V.Ramesh’s Harley Rram Hospital and open terrace of the residences of Dr. V.Ravindranath and Dr. Jeyachandran. Since the practice of pharma companies ’sponsorship was not in vogue during that time, all members used to contribute in turns for the dinner meetings. These meetings promoted good understanding and great camaraderie among members.
As the MANUS grew, many continuing urological education programs were organized for the benefit of undergraduates and M.S., post graduates at Madurai Medical College and this initiative attracted many students to take up urology as their career in future. MANUS has also conducted many workshops including preconference workshops, a great accomplishment realized by the efforts of late Dr.T.R.Murali. Apart from academic meetings MANUS arranges family get togethers.
MANUS has so far organized four conferences - ASUCON(SZUSICON-1995), TAPASUCON in 2001 & 2018 at Kodaikanal and TAPASUCON 2011 at Madurai. The Kodai conferences were in house conferences, the first of its kind introduced in this part of the country by MANUS.
